Studio Ghibli Statement on the Passing of Isao Takahata

Dedicated Ghibli Freak Molly Hall discovered this website while mourning the passing of Isao Takahata, and answered my call for translators of Studio Ghibli’s official statement. Much thanks to Molly for her assistance.

Director Isao Takhata’s Obituary

Mr. Isao Takahata, who continuously over the years delivered to the world many masterpieces of animation, passed away on Thursday April 5, 2018 at 1:19 a.m. at Teikyo University School of Medicine Hospital.

The cause of death was lung cancer and age of death was 82 years old.

While we pray here from our hearts for his soul’s peace, we humbly report that a private wake and funeral service will be held for his close relations.

With regards to condolence gifts, flower tributes, messages, visits, and so forth, we are firmly unable to accept them and meanwhile will be in touch with further information.

We also plan to hold a “farewell party” on May 15.

We will communicate the details of the farewell party once they are decided and we request your patience in the meantime.

This is the end of the message.

From Studio Ghibli
“Because he was a person who had things he wished to do, I think it is regrettable.
I consulted with Hayao Miyazaki, and Ghibli will throw a grand farewell celebration to see him off.”
Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki
