Hayao Miyazaki is one of my absolutely favourite filmmakers of all time. Certainly my favourite creator of animated movies. Say what you will about the man’s character, but his career is one marked by works of beautiful, humane, dramatic, ecologically-centred and feminist stories of a quality and resonance not matched by many other directors, and that will live on in the cultural history of our species as long as that species endures.
I’ve been meaning to write a lengthy, heartfelt piece about Miyazaki’s films and what they mean to me for a long while, but goddamn is it hard to carve a healthy portion of free time out of the mountain of marble that is adulthood. When I do finally get round to writing that piece though you better believe there’s gonna be a lot of talk about planes. Because, I mean—Miyazaki!
